TAI CHI CHUAN Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese martial
art (Chuan) based on the theory of Tai Chi (the interaction of yin and yang),
which combines self defence meditative, health, and philosophical elements. The
idea of yin and yang is more than 3000 years old and comes from the Book of
Changes. Tai Chi Chuan can therefore be defined as philosophy in action. The main aspects of the Tai Chi Chuan are: solo hand form — a continuous soft flowing sequence of techniques;
pushing hands — various drills trained with a partner:
self
defence
—
in self defence the method used involves evasion and counter attack;
weapon
training
—
the traditional weapons of spear, sabre and sword are taught; internal strength — 24 Yin and Yang exercises with martial, therapeutic and meditative aspects. Classes at the Budokwai are
temporarily suspended so please enquire if interested. The instructor is Dan
Docherty who has trained in Tai Chi Chuan since 1975.
