Terminology
AIKI
Often used as short form of the word Aikido. AIKIDO Art formed by Morihei Ueshiba ( Yueshiba ). The word is made up of three Japanese characters
Ai
Harmonize with, meet, etc.
Ki
Spirit, etc. ( can be thought of as Power, etc. )
Do
Way, road ( the ethically correct way, of’ life as well as the art.
)
DOGU Tools, weapons for training, etc.
DOJO
Training hail or room.
DOMO ARIGATO-GOZAIMASU Thank you very much. Arigato or even Domo are
sometimes used.
DORI
Phonetic change of Tori. See Tori.
ERI Collar & lapel.
GAESHI Phonetic change of. Kaeshi. See Kaeshi.
GI On the end of a noun means clothes, kit etc.
GO-KYO
Lit. 5th Teaching. A straight ann ( lock ) holding position.
Ude-Nobashi.
HAISHIN
Back stretching.
HINERI A twist.

As in Kokyu-Ho a method; a way.
DAI-IKKYO Lit. 1st Teaching. Ude-Osae. An arm—hold.
IRIMI Lit, going into ( towards ) the ( partner’s ) body.
IRIMI-NAGE has a.connection with the above,( though may be done Tenkan ).
A throw where the thrower’s arm is across the partner’s body.
J I ME
Phonectic change of Shime. See Shime.
Jo A stick.
KA
As in Aikido—ka= An expert. In Britain is used as a convenient
phrase for anyone doing Aikido.
KAESHI A turn over, give back, et;c.Best thought of as turn up and out
from the body.
KAITEN Turn or rotate.
KATA As in Kata-te-tori One ( of a pair ).
KATA As in Kata-Tori Shoulder.
KATA As in Juno-Kata Form, a standard set, etc.
KOKYU has a meaning of
breathing, knack, trick, etc.
KO KYU- N AGE
A throw where the thrower’s chest is in a naturally expanded
position. Most Aikido throws could be called this but Kokyu-nage is used
to mean a forward throw where the partner is thrown
by his own grip.
KEI-KO Training so kei-ko-gi
KOTE Used to mean wrist but
is the Gauntlet used in sword fighting or fencing ( Kendo).
KUBI Neck.
MAE Front or forward as in Mae-Ukemi.
MAITTA I’m Defeated; I give in. Said when the taps of submission are not
possible
MAWASHI Turn
MOCHI From verb Motsu to have, take, hold.
MUNE Chest.
NAGE A throw.
NI- KYO Lit. 2nd Teaching
Kote-Mawashi . A wrist-hold.
NOBASTII
As in Ude-Nobashi ( Go-Kyo ) Stretch.
OMOTE Direction of technique, see Irimi.
O-NEGAI-SHIMASU If you please; would you please
OSAE As in Ude-Osae ( Ikkyo ) hold down
OTOSHI From verb Otosu, to drop
RYO As in Ryo-te-tori, both ( hands ).
SAN-KYO Lit. 3rd Teaching (Kote—Hineri)

SHI-HO Lit.Four directions
SHIKKO Lit Kneeling going. Knee walking
SHIME Strangle or wring
SHOMEN As in Sho-men-uchi,
used as front of the head
SOTO Outside.
SUMI As in Sumi-otoshi, (

TAN-T0 Lit. Short

TE Hand
TE-KUBI Wrist.
TEN-CHI Lit. Heaven and
Earth
TEN-KAN Turn, change. As in

TORI As in Kata—te—Tori to
Take ( hold of )
TORI Lit. Taker. The
one who applies the Aikido technique. A term easier to understand is
Nage Lit. Thrower.
TSUKI A Thrust, Stab,
Lunge.
UCHI
As in Sho=men-Uchi hit.
UCHI
As in Uchi-kaiten-nage Inside.
UDE Arm.
UKE
Lit. Receiver. Person who attacks and is defeated by the Aikido
technique.
UKE-MI Lit Receiving Body. Breakfall.
UNDO ( Physical ) Exercise.
URA
Direction of technique. ( Ten-kan ).
USHIRO The Back, rear, ( from ) Behind.
WAZA Technique.
YOKO MEN As in Yoko-men-uchi. (Blow
to) the side of the head, or neck.
YON-KYO Lit. 4th Teaching. Tekubi-Osae. A fore-arm-hold.
